Weekly News Links Week of April 19

Posted by Lisa Vielee on April 20, 2010 in Family Activities, Healthy Recipes, Weekly Links

We’ll start this week’s news links by saying thank you to all who walked and supported the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure this past Saturday. Our own FitCity Mom, Kelly Bailey Young and her team organized a great 2010 race, with more than 40,000 participants! If you participated in the Race for the Cure and you’re motivated to support other local and national walks/running events, check the schedule here.

Now, onto this week’s health news …

Plenty of fun and healthy recipes here. Some are almost too cute to eat, like the turkey and rice mice and the silly hummus heads. Once you get to the web site, scroll down to see the pics and recipes.

There are so many studies about health and fitness. While the data can sometimes be confusing, the latest findings confirm once again that: 1) some exercise is better than no exercise at all and 2) physical activity AND healthy eating must go hand-in-hand.

The food and fitness link is so real for me! I have to confess that even when I was consistently going to the gym and doing boot camp twice per week, it hardly made a difference because my food choices were so atrocious. “I went to the gym and worked really hard in boot camp so it’s totally ok for me to sit here and watch TV and eat ice cream out of the container with a giant spoon and hershey’s syrup!” Riiiiiight. It soooo doesn’t work that way!

Carrot-Apple Cupcakes with Cream Cheese frosting… That sounds so yummy!! I wonder if I could make the cupcakes with some whole wheat flour instead of just all-purpose. And then use a healthier sugar- maybe a stevia blend. Add some wheat germ, too. Then skip the frosting and call them muffins instead!

Good stuff. I have 2 preschool aged daughters who LOVE hummus, especially with broccoli. Check out this link for a quick and easy healthy recipe. There’s a video demonstration to show how easy it is too! http://adjust2wellness.com/custom_content/c_25314_mexican_soup.html
