I do a lot of things in the community, and one of those is I’m the Executive Director of an organization called the Center of Wellness for Urban Women (CWUW). We are a young nonprofit targeting woman and their families to be empowered to live healthier lives.
Something we started doing last year a walking program on the Canal. It’s a very relaxed program with the goal of getting women and men walking at least 30-60 minutes one day per week.
Walking is the easiest form of exercise and I love it. I personally walk on the Greenway near Eagle Creek or just on the treadmill at the gym. I make sure I get at least 30 minutes of brisk walking in per day. When we’re on the Canal, the women walk at their own pace. We have some that walk very briskly and others who need to walk a little slower. No matter the speed we offer each other support as we’re walking.
What is even better is to take a look at the beauty of Indianapolis! Your environment is a part of your health. I make sure I take a picture of the skyline as we’re walking.
You must wear the appropriate shoes when you walk. I switched from wearing my old sneakers to wearing a new pair and it makes a world of difference. My knees and feet thank me. You know me. Of course, I have my iPod on so I can walk and sing. Remember not to have the music up too loud if you’re walking outside. You still have to pay attention to your surroundings.
Need help getting started? Here’s a site to help you “build the walking habit.” From time to time, FitCity has challenges to help you count your steps. Walkstyles is another website to encourage your walking program.
CWUW walks EVERY Saturday morning at 8am on the Canal (meet on Ohio Street) and EVERY Wednesday evening at 6:30pm at Northwestway Park on W. 62nd Street. I hope you will join us!
