When many children hear the words fruits or vegetables or see them on their plates, it often times results in crying, screaming, or sometimes uncontrollable tantrums. At least that was what I did as a child, leaving my grandmother and aunt to resort to punishment if I did not eat them.
As a child, I liked foods that were sweet and chewy or salty and crunchy – candy and potato chips. So of course, I would take the punishment. There was no way to get me to eat fruits and vegetables.
Wow, how times have changed. I fill half my plate with vegetables and eat five servings of fruit each day – I really like it, too!
Lately I’ve heard a lot about the creative ways parents sneak vegetables and fruit into kids’ meals.
I was very impressed with two resources that I found. Although both require some effort for parents, these are simple and practical ideas. This video clip demonstrates some ideas about how to make cupcakes, brownies, and cookies healthy. You can even sign-up for recipe tips at Sneaky Chef.
The other resource, Deceptively Delicious is just as sneaky with its ideas. You can view a few of their free recipes.
I hope you find these useful in getting your children to eat (and like) more fruits and vegetables. I look forward to hearing about your sneaky ideas for healthy eating, too!
