This summer FitCity Indianapolis partnered with OnTrackFitness to provide a 5K walk/run program to help get people ready for a 5K this fall. My intention was really just to get into the habit of walking and to have some support from some new “friends.” The program was free, we received a free T-shirt, plus encouragement and tips from a fitness trainer. It sounded like it would be so easy, but there were a few bumps along the way. Here’s a brief recap:
Week 1: We met at Freedom Park in Greenwood. Staff from Butler University provided a fitness assessment, meaning they weighed us, took our blood pressure and such. I briefly introduced myself to some of the other participants and then we started walking or running at our own pace. I walked with Amy, another FitCity mom, and her kids, and I had a good time walking and chatting.
Week 2: This was the best week. I brought my 9-year-old daughter with me, and we walked at Northwestway Park. My daughter took off without me, and we both had a good time! I really liked this park because there were so many different people out and about. There were parents with kids, teens and tweens and even seniors. We completed two miles that night.
Week 3: We were supposed to meet at the Canal downtown, but at about 4 p.m. I decided it was just too hot!
Week 4: I traveled out to Freedom Park again. I was supposed to walk 3 miles, but again the excessive heat was a major deterrent. I walked 1.5 miles. Still, I was proud that I fought my natural urge to stay at home relaxing under the air conditioning.
Week 5: We had our final meeting in Freedom Park, and I was determined to finish the full 3 miles. I did it! There was no Rocky music or ribbon to cross at the finish line, but it was still a big accomplishment for me.
What did I learn from all of this? First, the program solidified what I already know about myself. I tend to start out excited and motivated about starting something new, and then I struggle with consistency. Second, I am a fair-weather person when it comes to fitness. I don’t like rain, excessive heat, too much wind. . . Unfortunately, that means Mother Nature provides me with an excuse not to get outside almost every day! Third, I learned that what really made the difference was having someone fun to walk with me. Week 1 and Week 2 were the best because I had a friend and my daughter by my side.
What does this mean going forward? I’ve got to find a friend to walk with me. I need that in-person support and I need someone to be accountable to on a regular basis. In fact, I’ve already put out the “call for help” to someone I met during the 5K program. I think that will make all of the difference in reaching my goal to be more consistent. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your fitness goals?

Good for you for finishing! I (as you know) totally flaked after the first week. The excuses abounded — too far to travel, too hot, too little sleep the night before. And I fell guilty every time I see that dang t-shirt!
But I was so glad you were with me that first week, and your kids are very cool. It made it seem like a walk in the park (which I guess it was technically) instead of 5K training! And wear your shirt proudly since I know you (like most moms) had a Summer of Go in one way or another!
