The past two weekends I enjoyed the guilty pleasure of being a couch-potato during the Colts playoff games. They were exciting, nerve-wracking, fun – and filled with plenty of junk food and adult beverages. My kids were spoiled by all of the chips, dip, Colts cookies and yes, even Touchdown Sundae ice cream (thanks Edy’s).
But now that the playoffs are over – and I’ve experienced a “false start” to my New Year’s Resolutions, it’s time to review my game plan and get back in the game!
So, while Super Bowl plans are being made, I’m working on ways my family can enjoy the big game while still being active and eating a little healthier. Here are some of my ideas:
- Rather than ground beef burgers I’m going to try out this tasty turkey burger recipe.
- Instead of chips for the kids, I’m going to pop low-fat popcorn and have bowls of pretzels for them to enjoy.
- Rather than sodas and fruit drinks, I’m going to fill our cooler with plenty of bottled water and other low-calorie drinks. And yes, I’ll still have a few beers in there, but at least I drink Light beer.
- During commercials I’m going to find ways to fit in exercise by throwing out challenges – how many sit-ups, push-ups, jumping jacks can everyone do before the game starts.
- At halftime (weather permitting) I hope to play a little football in our own backyard.
- When the Colts win, we’ll burn a few extra calories by doing our own version of a victory dance.
I need help staying in the “neutral zone” these next two weeks – and especially on Feb. 7, so if you have any other ideas of how I can eat healthy, move more and still enjoy the Super Bowl, please let me know. Trust me; if I continue to “fumble” I’m going to end up looking (and feeling) like a 200+ pound linebacker or defensive end!

Kelly,
My sister introduced me to a delicious but definitely sinful buffalo chicken dip over the holidays. So when a friend brought over a considerably healthier version of the same dip for last week’s Colts game, I was doing my own victory dance.
The recipe is from Hungry Girl.com. You can find it as the 2nd recipe listed at this link:

Kelly,
Those all sound like wonderful ideas, especially the victory dance!! You might want to try some hummus for a nice dip, it is great with preztels and pita chips. Also why don’t you have the kids make up their own little cheers to do during the commercials, give them time to plan though. Maybe you could have them pick a quick exercise to do during the commercials as well. Have fun and GO COLTS.

Those are really good ideas. . . I was thinking you could also toss a nerf football around the room during the slow parts of the game, as long as you don’t have any expensive knick-knacks that you have to worry about knocking down.
) Great blog, Kelly!
I love the great ideas shared with this blog. I didn’t even think about Hummus – good idea. And I know one of the girls is bringing chicken wings, so I’ll pass along the recipe for the dip. Thanks! Tana, great suggestion with the nerf football. The family hosting the Super Bowl party has a big basement that lends itself for an indoor game.
Thanks so much for reading – and for sharing! Go COLTS!!
Add in some cut up fruits and veggies… carrots, celery, orange slices, etc.
Maybe make a fruit game… anytime the colts get a touchdown, everyone races to see who can peel an orange the fastest…
