Hi, My name is Kelly Young. I’m new to blogging, but not new to FitCity. So when asked to join the FitCity Moms Blog I thought “why not?”. After all, I’m a mom of a 6- and 2-year-old and I’m (somewhat) fit.

Most important thing to know…I like to have fun! So let’s start with a game of True and False to help you get to know me (I’ll throw in a dare, for those who prefer Truth or Dare).

I’m Kelly Young, married, mother, owner of Baise Communications. True

I’m a public relations consultant for FitCity. True

Media relations, public relations and everything in between. I write the FitCity e-newsletters too, so if you have ideas for an upcoming issue, let me know. And subscribe, if you haven’t already.

Because I work for FitCity I am fit. False

I may write about healthy habits, but I don’t always practice them.

I am active. True

I’m training for an Olympic distance triathlon. So, for 20-weeks I’m good about swimming, running and biking.

Because I exercise 4-5 days a week, I’m losing weight. False

No! I have 10 pounds I’d love to lose. That’s where healthy eating (or lack thereof) comes in. Since I struggle with that, I’m always looking for ideas on healthy food options I can buy or cook.

You should eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. True

I eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. False

Sometimes, not that many in a week. I’m a bad eater and need to be better – for me and my kids.

Here’s where the dare comes in…I dare you to take the FitCity Pledge. In return, you can dare me to eat healthier or try a new event. I welcome your feedback, ideas, recipes and tips – not just about nutrition, but fitness too. So, let the fun begin!

Kelly, I rarely eat all my daily required fruits and vegetables, but I love to make my own fresh juices and smoothies. One of my favorites is called “C” You Soon. It is loaded with vitamin C and will supercharge the immune system and give you that extra energy boost to help with your Olympic distance training.

    (1) Grapefruit, juiced
    (2) Oranges, juiced
    (3) Ginseng Liquid Extract (1 dropper)
    (4) 1/2 Vitamin C Crystals

Fresh juices are nothing like you get in the stores. You won’t believe it!

Kelly, the key to fruits and vegetables is to find the proper preparation method that works fo your taste buds…don’t like them raw, try steamed, broiled, grilled or sauteed. I’ve found that I like cauliflower roasted and asparagus roasted or sauteed but not grilled. Fruits in with yogurt and a touch of honey for sweetness is really good too. Once you find what you like and start eating fruits and vegies, you’ll be amazed at how good you feel!

Kelly Young- your eating habits sound like my 10 year old’s. But that’s OK. I bet you are much more fit than he is. Lora is write- smoothies are the way to go. I prefer smoothies to juice. I’m sure you have a blender so you can whip them up pretty quick. If you like yogurt, its easy to sneak fruit into it.

I keep fruit in a bowl on our kitchen table so that if anyone gets hungry, fruit is always available. My four year old snacks from that bowl all the time. I keep apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes. It’s good to have it sitting out where it can be seen to remind you to eat healthy!

Here’s my dare… I dare you to eat five servings or fruits and vegetables every day for 1 week. You won’t believe the energy you will have.

I’m going to take your dare and try the FitCity challenge. I just signed up. I’m sure it will be good for me. Let me know when you decide to take my dare!

Thanks for the smoothie recipe (yum), suggestions on how to prepare veggies – and the dare. I’ll take it! I’ll shop this weekend for fruits and veggies (embarrased to say that I only have 3 bananas and a bag of frozen peas in my house right now. YIKES). I’ll report back in one week to let you know how it’s going. Keep the great ideas coming! Thanks.

Your new blog is working. After I read your post, I went and ate an apple instead of going to the vending machine. Keep up the good work!

  6. Susan Bailey says:

Kelly, I am pleased that you are blogging about good nutrition. What a great idea!Unfortunately, your Dad and I grew up in the “Baby Boomer Generation” when everyone ate anything and everything without any regard for its nutritional value. Now, we are trying to learn how to eat nutritionally. We try to eat 5-6 small, balanced meals per day. We are also trying to eat anything that starts with the letter “c” in moderation – chocolate, cookies, cake, cupcakes, cocoa and cream pies. I think “moderation” is the key to our success.

  7. Lisa Vielee says:

    Mrs. Bailey,

I really like your “c” tip! That is a pretty fun way to moderate the sweets. Thanks for the suggestion.

  8. Jennifer Stringer says:

Oh no, I guess the things to eat in moderation with the letter “c” would also include Coke and cheescake — two of my weaknesses.

    Kelly-

I can’t wait to hear how your week of fruits and veggies went. I’m eating an apple right now, which made me think of you!

Thanks for checking. I must admit … it was difficult for me to fit in 5 fruits and vegetables – especially after standing in the vegetable aisle for way too long and not finding anything that just jumped into my cart. However, I made a real effort to eat the fruits … and found that I’m a fan of Smoothies – do they count as a serving of fruits.

Help me out bloggers … I continue to need variety and ideas.
