Meet new FitCity Mom Danielle Spears

Posted by Danielle on February 2, 2010 in Danielle Spears, Fitness Motivation

Hello everyone, my name is Danielle Spears. Some basic information about me is that I am a 31-year-old mother of three wonderful children all under the age of 5. They are: Brian 4, Sean 18 months and Colleen 3 months. My loving husband is a night shift Respiratory Therapist at a local hospital, which means he works 12 hours at night and sleeps in the day.  I am left to take care of the kids, cooking, cleaning, etc.

To make things more interesting my son Brian is autistic and I work part time for St. Francis Hospital. Needless it can be difficult to make time for a healthy lifestyle, which is why I am here.  I would love to learn new ways of becoming healthy, without taking too much time, and share what I learn with the moms of FitCityIndy.

I grew up in a family where cooking, or should I say baking, was very serious work.  My father’s family owned a bakery in Illinois and I found myself there most weekends eating whatever I could get my hands on.  To this day I still love to bake and do so whenever I can. The words chocolate and cookies are like a drug to me.

My stepfather was also in the food business and owned 4 Burger King restaurants. Let me tell you, when your family owns any kind of restaurant you go to work in them at a young age. And when surrounded by hamburgers, French fries and sodas most of my teenage and young adult years I had a less than wonderful diet plan.

As I’ve gotten – gasp – older, I’ve found great meaning in life and what I hold dear.  With my son’s autism and the overall state of children’s health, today I find myself wanting to set a better example for my kids.  That means they can’t have the diet I grew up with.

While I’m not a huge fan of exercising I do plan on finding a way to incorporate it not only into my life but my children’s as well.  I also plan on incorporating a better nutritional plan into my family’s life, starting with a whole foods diet.

So I invite you to watch my journey into a healthier lifestyle not only for myself, but my family.

Welcome to the Fit City Moms team! I have 3 kids (4 if you count my husband!) and a job outside the home too. So I’m with you on the difficulties of good nutrition and exercise. I’m currently participating in the American Heart Association’s Better U challenge, which has helped me make some necessary improvements. I’m always glad to have friends share the journey!

Welcome Danielle! While I’m going to miss writing monthly about my own fit journey, I’m looking forward to hearing from you about how to stay healthy with three kids under age 5. Wow – your house must be a busy one!

  4. Danielle,

I can so relate to the “sweets” from the bakery because I grew up with a bakery not too far from my home. I remember that we would get cakes and other treats from there weekly for desserts. As a child, I could eat those things – in moderation- because I used to play outside at the park, ride my bike, jump rope (double dutch) with my friends, or play at a local neighborhood community center. Even as a teenager, my friends and I would walk places together or join an after-school activity. It was so much fun because I could eat my “sweet treats” and play or walk to still be healthy.

    Take care.
