I am Eleather Baker, the program director for FitCity. I am a native Hoosier, now living with my cat in Camby, IN. I may not be a mother yet, but the pursuit of good health is one of my three passions in life, the others being my worship and the humane treatment for animals. I think trying to stay healthy comes with a great measure of time and individual responsibility, which is why I want to share my efforts with you.
Growing up in my family meant eating on the go, lots of “good” soul food, and watching TV. This article about the importance of families eating together and the connection it has with healthy weight made me realize how much easier a healthy lifestyle would be now if it was part of my lifestyle growing up. I’m not using this as an excuse, but it is hard trying to change after 30 years of unhealthy eating! I still enjoy my “good” soul food, my sweets and snacks, but I eat them less often and in much smaller portions.
Exercise, exercise, exercise (sighing) is definitely becoming part of my daily life, but it has been a struggle. I started by doing simple things to become more physically active, and now I’m slowly adding more structure to establish an exercise routine. At one point though, I was released by my personal trainer because I continued to gain weight (not muscle, either) – a whopping 27 lbs. Exercise became an excuse to just eat more. Now I know it is something that must become part of my lifestyle if I want to be healthy as I can. This recent article is helping me to change my attitude towards being forever healthy.
Because of my personal struggles, I’m not going to tell you that a healthier lifestyle is easy, fast, or simple. My hope is that through the FitCity Moms Blog, we all will be able to share our success, find ways to overcome our challenges, and take ownership of how important it is to have a healthy life for us and for our children.

I can’t wait to hear about your successes. What a wonderful website for woman. Thanks for promoting a positive attitude for our city to model.
I’m with you, sister. If it wasn’t fried, my family didn’t eat it. And while we had a huge garden growing up, our fresh green beans never came to the table without bacon and bacon grease to season it.
Changing those kinds of habits is hard. But it’s doable!
