Summer is here, which means school is coming to an end and countless trips to the pool and zoo with my kids. Summer time also means backyard BBQs and tomatoes! For some reason this year the thought of fresh ripe tomatoes has me very happy. Whether I eat them by themselves or on a burger, I just want them!
My husband and I have really been trying to eat more fresh vegetables in the last few months. Tomatoes really being a key! But, I’m quite honestly sick of buying less than perfect tomatoes and other vegetables from the market. They are never quite as good as you would get in a garden, and they are just too expensive. What can I say, I’m a coupon queen.
So I’ve decided to start a garden. My only problem is that I’m trying to sell my house and digging up a 10′ X 10′ piece of land in my backyard is out of the question. What else could I do? The answer came to me as I left my house the other day and saw my container of flowers on the front porch. A vegetable container garden!
I don’t have to dig up my backyard, but could still have the tomatoes, strawberries and even lettuce that I desire. I thought this would be so simply, and then I did a little research. Container gardens are actually quite a bit of work. Not only do they take more water than typical gardens, but you also have to replant as they grow. There are also different types of container gardens . You could do a container that is on the ground or use a hanging basket. Also, not all vegetables work well with containers. While I know I can do strawberries, tomatoes and even lettuce, I probably won’t try for carrots. Even with the work, I still plan on trying it.
So this weekend I will be buying my containers and veggies and dipping my hand in the world of gardens. I can’t wait for my first juicy tomato.
