It's really a mom's job to lead her family to wellness, isn't it? I'm certain I'm not doing it as well as you are, but I'm doing a little; we eat a lot of white meat and fresh fruits and vegetables. I guess that's a start. Good job on your leadership, Liz!

The changes in our family are due to Miss Chef. She put herself on a running schedule in March, and while she's gotten derailed a couple of times, she's still much healthier. She's lost some weight, and really enjoys the time she spends running. And while we've both tried for years to avoid processed foods, she's gotten really serious about eating more plants and a LOT less animal. Seeing the changes in her has made it easier for me to take at least small steps in the right direction...and as the saying goes, every journey begins with the first step!

Liz, I think that all of these things are great! I've been noticing some improvements in my kids too. My husband decided to do the 21 day cleanse with me that I've been blogging about. He thought it would be his way of supporting me. I've really enjoyed having someone else to share in the food experiments.

Even just tonight I used crumbled tofu for my taco "meat". It's only the 2nd time I've used tofu. I was shocked that my 11 & 13 y/o's wanted to try it!

I've been pretty lucky with the kids being good fruit and veggie eaters. Since I have always offered up fresh fruits and veggies for snacks it's just normal for them, and while they all have a veggie they turn their noses up to they really do eat a diverse diet of fruits and veggies, I think.

My kids have been comparing their dinner to ours a lot lately too. They ask how is my meal healthier than theirs. They want to know what makes theirs higher in fat, or sugar, and recognize the differences in their food choices. I've been most excited about that!

Thanks so much Liz for sharing your journey with all of us. You really inspire me nearly every day. I've been trying to keep up with my kids for years, and I hope to be as active as you are real soon. These runner kids of mine aren't getting any slower! Ha!

In reference to your title: I think you're doing a lot right. Inspiring your family to be healthier is something to be very proud of. The best thing is that you're doing it while your kids are kids. They're so impressionable right now. Between your blog, Facebook and FitCity, there's bound to be readers who you helped realize that they too can "do it".

One thing that has changed in my house is who is in charge of our nightly walks around the neighborhood. Last summer, I had to lace up my shoes and practically beg my husband to go on a walk. This summer, he is ready before me and often walks another circuit of the neighborhood after dropping me off at home! Together, we have set a goal to walk a 5K a month. It doesn't matter how fast or slow we walk it, just that we do it. The best part is getting to talk to him about the day and the kids while walking.

Liz, I have been noticing the same changes in my family! I was inspired by your journey over the past several months, and a week ago decided to drastically change the way I fuel and move my body. My kids are coming around so quickly, it's astonishing.

My 3 year old, Fletcher: He will try just about anything I offer him. When we grocery shop, I am making a habit of shopping produce first, and he picked peaches and nectarines to eat for snack times this week. We filled up the cart with yummy fruits and veggies, and there was no room for processed foods and junk :)

My 5-year old, Lydia: What a HUGE change, and we've only just begun. She has decided she loves shrimp and chose it over baked fish sticks. She drinks water with dinner (which is the only meal I allow her to have her previous favorite, sprite), just because it's good for her. She picked watermelon and apples for snack times. She does hip-hop aerobics with me occasionally (also free On Demand), and rides her bikes while I go on my morning walks.

These are things I should have been instilling in them all along. Now I am leading by example, and they are following me. And it's only been a week, I can't wait to see where they are 2 months from now, hopefully eating more vegetables next!
