Dancing for healthier living

Posted by Rhonda on June 22, 2010 in Family Activities, Fitness and Health Tips, Rhonda Bayless

After I had my daughter many moons ago, I lost the 72lbs I gained during pregnancy by dancing.  I would go in the basement of our home and dance, dance, dance for hours.  Luckily, my mother would watch my daughter as I used my love for music and dancing to recover from my pregnancy and to lose the excess pounds.  What I’ve found is that I still love to dance for my health.

Last year, I began attending Community African Dance classes with Njdeka Karmo.  It’s been a great experience. Sis Njdeka takes her time to explain the origin of the dance; we do a great workout with the drummers before we even get to the dance.  Its 90 minutes of movement and energy.  It’s very fun and educational.  Community African Dance is taking a summer break but will resume later this summer. If you are interested, send an email to Sis Njedka at iyabo@comcast.net.

Belly dancing is another great way to move your body and to embrace dancing. I’ve taken one class and I loved it.  It’s my desire to return to belly dancing class. Youtube has great instructional clips and there is a belly dance class and salsa lessons offered by Into Salsa

I think the easiest thing to do is to just turn up the music and move your body.  My mom used to call me into the basement and make me dance with her. We’d dance to some Ike and Tina and shake it.  Later, I did the same with my daughter with the music of Prince and New Edition.  It’s funny. My daughter will challenge me to dance to some of the music she likes and tries to teach me the latest dances.

This is our family time and it’s full of movement! At the end of the day, on this health journey, it’s always good for me to remember my love of music and dancing.

I completely agree with you. Dancing is such a fun and great way to lose weight and exercise. There are a ton of great dance dvd’s and games to play. Or just throw on your favorite music and dance. I personally love to dance while I clean too!

FitCityIndy should do a dance night somewhere, that would be amazing!

I recently got to try Zumba with a guest membership for 2 weeks to a gym. I LOVE IT! I couldn’t make the class schedule work… but I did buy the Zumba DVDs and I can usually manage to do them once a week.

I also looooove my Wii Just Dance and am eager to get the new Broadway dance game and the Gold’s Gym dance game coming out in August.

Sometimes, i can cut loose and just have fun dancing around. Most of the time, I need a little guidance and leadership so DVDs and the games and group classes really help.

The African Dance class sounds fantastic!!! I hope I can check it out sometime! We should have a Fit City Mom Bloggers night!
