I’m a huge fan of ice cream, so how did I not know that July is National Ice Cream Month – and that the third Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day? President Ronald Reagan created the holiday back in 1984 and I’m a little disappointed that I’ve missed celebrating this tasty holiday for the past 25 years.
As it turns out, President Reagan established the holiday because he recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food enjoyed by 90% of the nation’s population (that other 10% is missing out, in my opinion). I’m intrigued by the nutritious part, mainly because my ice cream indulgences are not always healthy.
So, in honor of this important holiday, my family and I decided to celebrate National Ice Cream Month to its fullest with some of the more nutritious scoops. Here are some of our favorites:
Breyers Double Churned Cookies & Cream Light Ice Cream: 120 calories and 4 grams of fat per half cup – and just as tasty as their regular ice cream.
Edy’s Slow Churned Strawberry Ice Cream: Although my kids prefer the chocolate cookies in the cookies & cream, we did like the berry flavor in this ice cream. It’s just 110 calories and 3 grams of fat for a half cup.
Fla-Vor-Ice: I think my kids could eat popsicles for lunch and dinner (and breakfast if I’d let them). Although I don’t think its technically ice cream, we’re going to let this cold treat slide – especially with just 20 calories and 0 fat.
Weight Watchers English Toffee Crunch: This is one of my favorites. Although a little higher in fat, it’s only 2 points for anyone counting Weight Watchers points. 110 calories and 6 grams of fat.

With just two weeks left to celebrate National Ice Cream Month, I’m busy checking out what other nutritious options are out there and worth trying. Share your recipes and favorite finds so I can continue to enjoy healthier ice cream this month, and every month!
